For those who believe in reincarnation, meditation is a way to recall past lives.

Meditation has many different facets. It can be used for medicinal purposes or for simple relaxation. Meditation can also be used to develop psychic abilities, further a personal spiritual journey, or for some, to recall lives that were lived in the past.

What Is Reincarnation?

Reincarnation is the belief that the soul is born time and time again into different bodies. With each incarnation, the soul learns different lessons which aids the soul in spiritual growth. The belief in reincarnation is more popular in Eastern cultures, although it is growing in popularity among Western cultures.

How Can Meditation Recall Past Lives?

Although the conscious memory can only hold so many memories, it's believed that the subconscious memory can recall every event that has ever taken place in an individual's life.

In addition, there are those who believe that the subconscious mind holds the memories of every lifetime the soul has ever lived. Meditation is one way to access these past lives.

A Meditation To Recall Past Lives

Begin this meditation by getting into a very comfortable meditative position. The key to this type of meditation is to be as relaxed as possible, thus allowing for a deeper meditation. Next, begin to take slow, deep breaths while keeping the eyes closed. While doing this, concentrate on how relaxed you're beginning to feel.

After a few minutes, when feeling calm and relaxed, envision a warm, golden light coming down and surrounding the body. Feel how safe and comfortable this light makes you feel. Now, look in front of you and envision that you are at the top of a beautiful staircase. When ready, begin to slowly walk down the staircase.

With each step, tell yourself you are becoming more and more relaxed. Continue taking the long, deep meditative breaths while descending. When reaching the bottom of the stairs, you will be at the beginning of a long hallway with many doors. Each door is a different color and each door represents a different past life.

Some doors will be very inviting, while others may cause discomfort or apprehension. With the first few times in doing this meditation, it is best to choose a door that brings a good feeling. Walk up to a door that feels comfortable and when ready, open the door and walk in.

Once through the door, try using all five senses to see if it is possible to experience anything. This may take a few minutes. If nothing happens, look down at your feet. Are you wearing any shoes? If so, are they men's or women's shoes? If able to determine this, continue to see if it is possible to tell what kind of clothing you're wearing.

By now, things should be coming into sharper focus. Explore the surroundings for as long as you'd like. If at any time you begin to feel uncomfortable or if finished exploring this past life, merely walk back through the door into the hallway. If unable to find the door, then envision yourself back at the beginning of the hallway.

Unfortunately, this particular meditation does not work for everyone. In order for it to work an individual must achieve a deep state of meditation in order to enter into an altered state of consciousness. However, don't give up if it doesn't work the first few times, especially if new to meditation. With practice, it can be possible to recall past lives.
